ABOUT THE SHOW
In her first solo show,  I am Child, I am Mother Rachel Borntrager explores the raw and real-time relationships between those who are vulnerable and those who care for the vulnerable, specifically that of a child and a primary care-giver. With the artist’s own experiences as a child and mother to guide her, this series debuts Rachel’s signature “Soma-Line™” method (a line dictated by interoception, or noticing the body’s current state of being) where she relies on the art elements of line and color to map her body's breath and nervous system for each memory painted.

This collection reflects honestly on both the beauty and brutality of being the helpless, the helped, and the helper; pushing and pulling together layers of graphite, acrylic paint, and oil pastel into blended abstractions of color, encoded with deeply personal meaning, often reading from left-to right, as you would read a story. With line and color as her language, Rachel can more fully express what her whole body feels in a single moment, rather than relying on select words, or narratives passed on or given to her. With each consecutive painting, visual patterns emerge within the Soma-Lines™, allowing the viewer to trace moments of felt safety-- to risk, to fear, and then perhaps back to safety again; each movement, angle, and line disappearing into washes of color encoded with memories and sensations.

Rachel’s gutsy and unapologetic approach to the canvas invites viewers to rethink how art and language are used in every-day life. With her paintings and in her workshops, Rachel hopes that each viewer and participant can begin, or continue, to learn how basic art elements can be a safe and meaningful way to play and to grieve, to risk and to heal, and especially, to help us become more-whole as humans.
